This breed is
nicknamed " The American Gentleman " because of his gentle
disposition. The Boston terrier is an American creation
originating in Boston, Mass. The result of a breeding between
an English bulldog and a now extinct white English terrier.
They were once called Round Heads or Bull Terriers. Having
been bred only in and around Boston and due to considerable
opposition from bull terrier and bulldog fanciers, the name
was changed to Boston Terrier in 1891. They were accepted into
the American Kennel Club in 1893. The modern Boston has become
such a favorite that Massachusetts chose it to be the official
state dog in 1979. Bostons are intelligent little dogs and
easy to train. They are very obedient and eager to please
their master. Bostons are affectionate and love attention.
They are much more energetic than you or I will ever be. Of
course most puppies are. Their coat is short and smooth and
virtually odor free. Very little maintenance is required. They
are good watchdogs. Don't be fooled by their small size for
the Boston makes as fine a watchdog as any canine. Put it this
way. Bostons are small, easy to care for and playful
companions and they make wonderful house pets because of
everything about them.
